Description
In a qualitative study, gifted high school graduates were asked to reflect on their most positive K-12 experiences. Themes in their language overlapped themes in the language of non-mainstream cultures in another study, with an emphasis on arts as expression, service, wisdom, humility, hard work, non-bookish learning, and family. Positive experiences provided balance to stressors related to academics and activities and were related to connection, contribution, meaning, mastery, satisfaction, and self-care. Core virtues from positive psychology, including transcendence, were reflected in students’ narrative descriptions. Findings call attention to a multitude of possibilities for future research and directions for programming.
