Description
Gifted and high potential youngsters come to the attention of school personnel due to their cognitive and affective strengths. Underserved populations also display strengths in developing skills that enable coping with a harsh environment and other adversities. However, counseling models rarely focus on these strengths as the path to solving problems. In contrast, solution-focused therapy emphasizes low inference and positive, forward-looking action to alleviate "stuckness" and resistance in therapeutic or educational contexts. In this session, participants learn how to use a solution-focused perspective, including using specific tools such as the Miracle Question, looking for exceptions, scaling, objectifying, and normalizing issues.
