Description
The advent of reliable automated chromatography instruments over the last decade has lead to a resurgence in normal phase chromatography as the method of choice for the purification of organic compounds for today’s Medicinal Chemist. Given the convenience and ease of carrying out this technique, it is often overlooked that utilizing this methodology generates significantly more waste than running the actual reaction. By highlighting this discrepancy, this purification technique has been identified as a tool to instill a Green Chemistry mindset amongst the Medicinal Chemistry department at Pfizer-La Jolla. By careful breakdown and focus on the individual components of this purification methodology, Green practices have been implemented on a gradual basis which have already yielded significant cost savings as well as reductions in chlorinated solvent use, energy and solid waste generation. This presentation will focus on how these small changes can lead to big results.
