Description
Less hazardous chemical synthesis is part of the green chemistry principles. Neither raw materials from renewable vegetal sources nor biodegradability of the end products guarantee that a green chemistry process will provide chemicals innocuous for the environment. Most personal care products are released down the drains after use, and may end-up in the aquatic compartment. They may be acutely or even chronically toxic to animal or vegetal species before their biological or physico-chemical degradation is completed. Here we’ll describe screening methods for the assessment of acute and chronic aquatic ecotoxicity using aquatic micro-algae, crustaceans and alternative methods to fish testing. Examples of these methods applied to chemicals produced through green chemistry process are provided.
