Description
The winter of 2010, brought together an enthusiastic group of undergraduate students in Dr. D. Kovacs’ course Green Chemistry Industrial Processes’ at Grand Valley State (GVSU) in Allendale, MI. For easy collaboration on their assignment, students suggested some of the social networks available on the internet and quickly created a Facebook page.
Their familiarity and ease of integrating electronic networking with learning about green chemistry and its applications brought to our attention that, despite a vigorous web of connection and communication among specialists in green chemistry already in place, there is a lack of similar type of interaction among future professionals, students that are yet to acquire a degree. With support and encouragement from the Great Lakes Green Chemistry Network (GLGCN), GVSU’s students eagerly launched themselves in a new project: they will envision and design a student-driven and student-led green chemistry network. This network will include website design, course material sharing, mentoring, blogging, students’ own creative work, and other activities. Students’ view of web design and collaborative networking will be presented and accomplishments will be shared.
This work is the seed for a larger, more vigorous and comprehensive project, the Great Lakes Green Chemistry Student Network (GLGCSN) designed as an integrated part of the existing GLGCN.
